10 Best Dog Breeds For People With Allergies

Allergic to Dogs
I have known many people who would have very much loved to experience the joy of having a dog join their family. Unfortunately, many of them felt forced to decide not do so because they, or someone in their family, was allergic to dogs. However, these very same people were usually unaware of the fact that certain dog breeds are far more “allergy friendly” than other dog breeds.

For a brief overview of symptoms, causes, and treatments, see Dog Allergies

However, thanks to Famous101.com, I am going to share with you a list of 10 famous dog breeds that seem to be better matches for people with dog allergies. Of course, be sure to consult your physician and veterinarian…

They’ve missed our favorite breed of dog – the cockapoo!!! We have three and would adopt more any day if we had the space and money 🙂

      Joyce – Are cockapoos “allergy-friendly” ?

      • Joyce August 21, 2013 at 5:01 PM #

We’ve had labs and hounds in the past which always created problems with my husbands allergies. He and my son (who has bad allergies as well) have never had a problem with our cockapoos. They do not shed, and I would compare them to the mini-poodle that we also had until just recently that passed even though their hair is sometimes straighter, softer and not so tightly curled. They also have more of the laid back personality of the cocker spaniel which is nice.

Thanks so much for sharing all the details of your cockapoo and allergy experiences!

Also an excellent non allergenic, loveing and intelligent breed is the Chineese Crested Hairless or Powderpuff. I can’t say enough about the breed and can’t imagine not having my little guy, Odie. I have had the pleasure of having both hairless and at the present time, Odie which is a powderpuff, they truly are ” Mans Best Friend”.

    You forgot to mention chiuahua

Mandi, I beg to differ. They shed and do have dander that bother most allergy sufferers. A ex bf that had 1 that really bothered mine every time I went over there.

Shih Tzu are very non-allergenic. My son and I both have allergies and asthma. We had 2 shih Tzu with no allergy problems. I would be very hesitant to bring a wire-coated dog like a schnauzer or westie in a home with an allergic person. In my experience, the rougher and more wirey the coat, the more it triggers problems. Something about the dander. Shih Tzu and other doggies who have a soft coat that is more like hair rather than fur tend to cause fewer problems.

And Shih Tzu have wonderful personalities: one part snuggle bunny, one part clown, and one part devil. They can sometimes be a little stubborn, and they will talk to you and try hard to tell you what they think you should be doing. And they live a long time. They adapt to any age,are happy to be with you no matter where–just great companions.

Rosemary, I have to agree with you we just got a Shih Tzu over the holidays and we also struggle with allergies and we’ve had no allergies problems. Lovable, spunky, just they’re wonderful I’m surprise they’re not on the list
